Our Voice for the Environment.
The Ostrakon Project is an initiative of Air Balloon to raise awareness of environmental issues and inspire people to take action. We believe that everyone has the power to make a difference, no matter how small.
The name of the project has a double meaning. It is inspired by the ancient Greek word “ostrakon,” which refers to a ceramic shard used to vote in a referendum. In ancient Athens, citizens could vote to ostracize a public figure they considered to be a threat to democracy. The Ostrakon Project aims to use this ancient tradition to remind people of their power to shape the future of our planet. In zoology, an Ostrakon is the shell that protects the body of an animal. It is made up of calcium carbonate and is found in a variety of animals, including mollusks, crustaceans, and echinoderms. Ostrakons can be used for a variety of purposes, including protection, camouflage, and respiration.
The Ostrakon Project is named after the ancient Greek word for “shell” because we believe that shells are a symbol of strength and resilience. Just like a shell protects an animal from its environment, we believe that we can protect our planet from the environmental challenges we face.
We believe that the environmental challenges we face today are urgent AND NEED TO BE ADDRESSED. We are facing a climate crisis, a biodiversity crisis, and a pollution crisis. These crises are interconnected, and they all pose a threat to our health, our economy, and our way of life.
The Ostrakon Project is committed to raising awareness of these challenges and inspiring people to take action. We believe that we can create a more sustainable future if we work together.
Our Actions
We hosted the 'Timeless Travellers' fundraising event on September 8th, 2023, at the Hani of Ibrahim gallery in old Pafos. The event was aiming to raise funds for the esteemed NGO Terra Cypria, with a sole mission of saving the endangered sea turtles of Cyprus and the Mediterranean Sea.
